"Go to the sign of Marvel's Axe, a dubious inn on the edge of the Thieves Quarter, in the City of Greyhawk, and look to your own wrist. If you perceive a bracelet and dangling dice, watch for the next throw in the war between Law and Chaos and be prepared to follow the compelling geas." -Signal

C2 - The Ghost Tower of Inverness, Cassandra's Spell Reflection

Not going on a theme here though I guess that would not be a bad idea. The module today is also from the list of top thirty adventures. This one came in at number thirty. This is a module I only recall being run in once and not sure that I ever ran. A friend from high school ran it for us when we were in high school. This may have been the last AD&D scenario that he ever ran. I don't have a solid recollection of the event other than it did not go well. I had attributed that to the group but now I think it was a combination of us wanting to free flow in what was designed as a tournament module, the module being one of the trickier one to run and also the nature of my friend. Incredible Champions GM though not so good at AD&D. I think he wanted things to flow chart too much and had issues when we didn't.

Originally written as the AD&D tournament module for Wintercon VIII held in Detroit back in 1979. The edition released there was a limited edition of 300 and is quite valuable. The module was released in its retail form in 1980 though the module pictures is a later printing. I do not know of any differences in the various C2 versions other than minor cover differences. The module includes not only the adventure but the scoring system and pregenerated characters along with the scoring system. Though it can be used as competition module as released or as part of ongoing campaign and it has information on this included.

The module is a tough one and will challenge even the most seasoned of players if they have not been through it before or read too much about it. Not reading about it might be hard as it was even written about in Wired where it received a favorable review. The module has also given us what now are sometimes considered dungeon/adventure cliches. There the chessboard room, rooms in the dungeon dedicated to all four elements, an outdoor area that really isn't outdoors and the key that must be assembled. It is possible these were in modules before this but there really weren't that many before this. I would suggest picking a copy up and if you have a chance to play it before reading too much about it (Sorry!) do so.

Spell:

Cassandra's Spell Reflection

Level: Sixth
Range: None
Duration: Special
Ares Effect: One Creature
Components: V,S
Casting Time: 1 Round
Saving Throw: None

When this spell is cast on an individual all spells that specifically target the individual will be directed back upon the person or creature who cast the spell. This will also affect spell effects from items such as wands.

This spell will by default have a duration of one round per level of the caster. The spell will be canceled if the recipient is the target of a spell higher than sixth level. The effect will also be canceled if they are in the effect area of an area effect spell. In either of these cases the recipient will not suffer no damage or be affected by the spell but the reflection affect is canceled and the spell is not directed back.

Should two casters with this spell on them cast spells at one another then an unusual effect will occur. The spell will begin bouncing back and forth between the casters. Each time the spell bounces the new target will need to make a save versus magic. If they save the spell bounces again. The first one to fail their save will lose the reflection effect. While this is occurring neither of the casters may cast other spells. If desired the caster may drop the effect but would then be subject of the spell cast at them.

Disclaimer: The spells that you will see, for how ever long the write ups last, were all written up back in the 80's so the terminology may not appropriate for anything other than 1e and depending on how well I did back then it may be slightly off for that as well. If there is any duplication of spells that exist now it is most likely I wrote mine first :) Please feel free to comment on them but try not to be too hard on me. If anyone wishes to use these in anything they print please let me know in advance and all I ask is proper credit.

This would make a funny episode in a time travel rpg: go back and preclude the printing of this module in 1908, to avoid a lot of paradoxes in the history of rpgs - and mid game even the rules of the currently played rpg change...
